Seeing "psychiatrist" on the mailbox of a downstairs neighbor, Laurence invites himself in for tea and talk. His lifelong friendship with Daniel and Frank is at risk. Three days ago, at an airport in Minneapolis, Daniel met and fell for Martha, a woman making a fresh start with the cheapest one-way flight to anywhere. When they landed in London, he gave her a one-night stay at a hotel, alone, and sent flowers to her room. In return, she disappeared. Her hotel bill included "champagne for two." He was shattered. Laurence understood; but not Frank, a sardonic, self-destructive out-of-work actor used to losing girlfriends to Daniel, the rich, self-absorbed music executive. By co-incidence, Frank then met Martha at the park, and gleefully set about charming her for revenge. But talking of their mutual miseries formed a connection between them. Their date at an art gallery ended abruptly with Martha disappearing.
Laurence now admits to his neighbor that he is in love with Martha, too; that he was the one who was with her at the hotel, and that he is the one with whom she left the gallery. Martha does not know that the three men know each other. Laurence feels guilty, but she is sleeping in his bed at this very moment. She is the woman he feels changes the universe for him. But should he hurt his two best friends, both still obsessing on her? His sage neighbor tells him that he already knows what to do. Laurence thanks him and returns to his own apartment. But she is gone. There is a note, telling him to meet her for breakfast at the Flower Market Cafe. He does not know that she has seen a photo of the three men together, concluded that they have been playing her, and sent the same invitation to the other two. All three show up at the cafe with flowers for her. She confronts them bitterly. Daniel and Frank fight. Laurence, who tends to freeze in awkward situations, hesitates too long. Martha walks away. Laurence must decide whether or not to pursue her.
