Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934)
Famous poet Elizabeth Barrett lives at home with her tyrant father and her brothers and sisters. She's been ill for years and is bedridden. Another poet, Robert Browning, admires her work and they exchange letters. When he comes to visit her, he declares his love for her. She tells him that it's impossible, because she's dying. He leaves, but promises to come visit again soon. Elizabeth manages to get up and walk for the first time in years and goes to the window to watch him leave.

Months pass, and Elizabeth's health improves. Robert continues to visit her, but Elizabeth won't agree to marry him. This is partly because of her health, but also because of her father. Her father rules over all his children, and has forbidden any of them to marry. He's especially obsessed with Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's doctors tell her that she's well enough to go to Italy, where the warmer climate may be essential for her health. Her father refuses, and plans to move the family to a more isolated place in England and cut them off from everyone. Robert proposes again, and since Elizabeth knows that staying at home might be dangerous for her health, she agrees. They plan to sneak away within a week. That night, Elizabeth's father comes in and tells Elizabeth that he wants the two of them to grow closer and for Elizabeth to only care and depend on him. Elizabeth is frightened by her father's attention, and she and she and her maid sneak out of the house that very night. Elizabeth and Robert get married.
