| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Mother |
John Henderson (Albert Brooks) is a neurotic, twice-divorced science fiction author who is not having any luck with dating. John believes that his relationship with his mother Beatrice (Debbie Reynolds) might just be the cause for all of his women troubles. John decides to conduct an experiment that will involve moving in with Beatrice to uncover any possible clues on what went wrong with his dismal love life.
While Beatrice is happy to welcome John into her home, she is perplexed as to why he is actually moving back in. She is bit insulted to hear that she might at the root of his romantic failures, but decides to play along anyway. On his first night home, John learns of his Beatrice's weird food habits, such as freezing everything including a mammoth brick of cheese, wilted salad and long-expired “Sweet Tooth” sherbert. John soon transforms his childhood bedroom (now used as an all-purpose storage area) back to its original splendor, complete with the original kid-sized furniture, toys, posters and the one modern convenience of a computer.
In order for John's experiment to be successful, he feels he must accompany Beatrice everywhere, from hilarious jaunts to the grocery store, bizarre outings to the mall and pre-planned activities to the zoo. John's successful younger brother Jeff (Rob Morrow) soon grows jealous of the time John and Beatrice are spending together, especially when Beatrice cancels a trip to visit Jeff and his family because it might interfere with John's experiment. Jeff throws a severe temper tantrum, which prompts his fed-up wife Cheryl (Isabel Glasser) to suggest that John is not the only one suffering from mommy issues.
