Charlotte and Anne Bronte are leaving their home in Yorkshire to work as governesses. Their sister Emily and brother Branwell are staying at home. Their plan is to give their salary to Branwell so he can study art in London. Emily doesn't think he's ready and disapproves of the plan. But, she later agrees to support them. One night Branwell gets drunk and has to be escorted home by the new curate, Arthur Nicholls. At first Emily thinks Mr. Nicholls is one of Branwell's drunken friends, but her mistake is cleared up and she becomes good friends with him and gradually falls in love with him. She talks about how much she loves home and doesn't want to leave.
Branwell comes home from London disillusioned. Anne and Charlotte also return. Mr. Nicholls escorts them to a ball, and Charlotte is cold towards him. She doesn't like his friendship with Emily and tells him that she's saving money to take Emily to Brussells so the two of them can be tutors. Mr. Nicholls kisses Charlotte. Branwell comes to the ball drunk and makes a scene and they have to leave.
Branwell sells one of his paintings and uses the money to send Emily and Charlotte to Brussells, although Emily doesn't want to leave. In Brussells Charlotte tells Emily about Mr. Nicholls' kiss, and Emily knows that Mr. Nicholls loves Charlotte. Charlotte becomes infatuated with a professor, and is devastated to find out that she has to go home because Branwell is sick. Emily and Charlotte write Wuthuring Heights and Jane Eyre, respectively, and Branwell realizes that the books show that both of them are in love with Mr. Nicholls. One day, Branwell goes out in a pouring rainstorm and Emily races after him. She finds him lying in the street and he dies in her arms.
Jane Eyre becomes a huge success and Charlotte goes to London to celebrate. Famous author William Makepeace Thackery admires her book but also says that Emily's book is a better one. Charlotte visits Mr. Nicholls who is now living in London. He tells her that he's in love with her and that he left Yorkshire because he couldn't return Emily's love for him. Charlotte now realizes that Emily is in love with him. She returns home and finds out that Emily is ill. Charlotte tries to tell Emily that she no longer cares for Mr. Nicholls, but Emily tells her not to lie and that they don't have much time because she's dying. She gives Charlotte her blessing to be with Mr. Nicholls and then she dies. Charlotte and Mr. Nicholls are together.
