Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Beverly Hillbillies
When a stray bullet from Jed Clampett's rifle strikes oil in his swamp, he and his gorgeous tomboy daughter Elly May, dimwitted nephew Jethro, and reluctant, fiesty mother-in-law "Granny" load up the truck and move to a mansion in Beverly Hills. Not used to being billionaires, they pick up road kill for future dining en route. Jethro tries a little wall-bashing in an attempt to free the (intercom) voices in the mansion walls. Jed scares away a potential investment partner by misinterpretting the meaning of "stud farm." Elly joins the high school wrestling team and trounces a bully. Granny sets up her "tonic" still in the yard.

Banker Milburn Drysdale will do anything to keep their account in his bank - even making Jethro its Vice President. When Jed says he wants to get hitched to someone who can help him raise Elly to be refined and ladylike, Drysdale's secretary Jane Hathaway starts a search. Jethro "helps" by buying garish billboard ads, attracting over 1200 applicants. Unscrupulous bank employee Woodrow Tyler and his greedy girlfriend Laura contrive a plan. Laura presents herself at the Clampett's door as French Governess Laurette Voleur, offering her services for Elly. She endears herself to Jed by pretending to share his interests. At his birthday bash, she elicits a proposal by convincing Elly it's what Jed wants, so that Elly convinces Jed it's what she wants. Tyler has the trusting Jed sign a secret prenuptial agreement, and gets ready to transfer Jed's money into a Swiss account the second Jed says "I do."

But Granny overhears them talking, and threatens to stop the wedding. The culprits take her, tied and gagged, to a disreputable retirement home where she is given electro shock therapy while the wedding preparations go ahead. Noticing Granny is missing, Miss Hathaway tracks her down with the help of Private Investigator Barnaby Jones (Buddy Ebsen, the original tv series' Jed.) Disguising herself as a nurse, she sneaks in, uses Granny's own tonic to revive her, and races with her toward the wedding-in-progress. They are stopped by security at the mansion's gates for not having their invitations, and have only seconds to find a way to get in, stop the ceremony, and save Jed's money.
