Stanley Stupid sees a garbage truck "stealing" his trash from the curb, and roller skates after it to investigate. At the dump, bitter Colonel Neidermeyer and his sidekick Lieutenant Neal are making illegal weapons sales to an assembly of international buyers, but Stanley sees nothing amiss in that. He asks them for a ride home. They assume he is a government agent infiltrating the proceedings, and buy him off with a car. As he drives away, they order him followed and killed. They begin to think he's a fearless genius when he explodes their pursuing jeep by carelessly tossing the cigarette lighter onto the fuel trail caused by a bullet. They call in a veteran assassin from Special Ops. Stanley unwittingly blows him sky high with a service station air pump. They are certain they have killed Stanley when an explosives expert sticks a bomb to the car, decimating it. But he was out of the car, chasing a bee.
Stanley returns home to his wife Joan, daughter Petunia, and son Buster, who have been creating their own trail of destruction searching for him. Stanley has a theory. Having been fired from the post office after suggesting a full-scale investigation into the volume of mail marked "Return to Sender," he believes that this evil man named "Sender" might also be responsible for the garbage disappearing. They break into the museum of a curator named Charles Sender. Discovering the planetarium inside, Stanley and Petunia believe they've died, gone to heaven, and been sent back to Earth by God (Lloyd the janitor) with the divine instruction to always trash their gum wads. Joan and Buster take a time machine (elevator) to prehistoric times (the dinosaur display) and discover Sender's headquarters and lab (office and science exhibit.) They emerge with his day planner. It reveals he is scheduled for a television interview.
At the station, Stanley stumbles into a trashy live talk show watched by Neidermeyer and Neal. Amazed he is alive, they send men to grab him. But Stanley's rage at a captor's gum-spitting gives him the strength to escape, and, with his family, pursue them to Warehouse 21. Unable to persuade the bad guys to be nice, he and his family take them on with Tarzan-like swoops, a forklift, spilled bullets, and explosions - thus attracting police. They return safely home. But Colonel Neidermeyer is lurking with evil intent inside their front door!
