| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Mudhoney |
During the depression, Calif, an ex-con, is hitching to California. In Missouri he gets a job working on a farm owned by Lute, an older man with failing health, his niece, Hannah and her abusive, alcoholic worthless husband Sydney.
Sydney spends most of his time at the local cathouse.
Calif and Hannah fall in love, but can't be together because she's married.
Sydney finds out about Hannah and Calif and feels his world crumbling. And, when he learns that Lute is leaving the farm to Calif instead of him it pushes him over the edge and he begins a rapid descent into insanity. With the help of a preacher, Sydney begins spreading rumors about Calif and Hannah. Growing crazier, Sydney burns the farm down. Then, in a fit of rage, he rapes and murders the preacher's sister.
An angry mob of townspeople apprehend Sydney and prepare to hang him.
However, Calif, Hannah and the sheriff try to stop them.
Calif holds the mob at bay with a shotgun.
The preacher shoves the barrel out from under Sydney, hanging him.
Calif shoots the preacher, but not before Sydney is killed.
