| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The MacKintosh Man |
Directed by John Huston in 1973. Mackintosh, one of the directors of the British secret services, suspects politician George Wheeler of being a communist agent. So he asks the free-lance spy Joseph Rearden to help him ensnare Wheeler. Joseph Rearden steals a diamond, gets caught and is sentenced to spend 20 years in jail. There, he's contacted by an organisation which agrees to help him escape in the company of Slade, a communist spy. The jailbreak is a success and Rearden wakes up in a mansion in Ireland.
Meanwhile, MacKintosh tells Wheeler that one of his agents has infiltrated the group who organised Slade's evasion. MacKintosh is hit by a car a few hours later and his daughter, Mrs. Smith, flies to Ireland to help Rearden who, exposed by Wheeler, managed to escape from the mansion he was locked in. MacKintosh and Mrs. Smith fly then to Malta where Wheeler intends to deliver Slade to the Soviets. There, Wheeler learns that MacKintosh had entrusted his lawyer with a letter taxing him with treason, a letter that should be opened only if MacKintosh dies.
