Chronically sullen Shawn Holloway is having an especially bad day. She's breaking up with her lying banker boyfriend Matthew; her father takes scant interest in her; her goldfish is dead; and she riles a client at the bank where she works. She goes to the bank's roof and prepares to jump. The arrival of the police is untimely for Charlie, Billy, and Jason, who have just robbed the bank and are trying to flee. Jason is shot. Billy panics and drives away. Charlie, stranded, bolts to the roof and ruins Shawn's suicide attempt by holding her hostage. She is incensed. On his promise that if she helps him out of this he will kill her later, she helps him to escape. But he incenses her again by letting her go. Having second thoughts that she will either kill herself anyway or reveal him, he saves her from an oncoming bus and bargains with her: She will get a share if she keeps quiet and does what he says.
He borrows a car from his ex, and drives with Shawn to the shipyard. Billy is to meet him here by 11:00 p.m., then flee with him to Venezuela. But Billy, beguiled by a money-hungry girl, does not show. While Charlie and Shawn wait for him, they talk, dance, laugh, and bond. She finds his upbeat nature infectious. But the police are closing in. Tired of waiting, Charlie leaves alone to find and confront Billy, take his share, and return to Shawn with hers. He is ready to part ways, but Shawn wants to go with him. As he starts to drive away from her, a police bullet grazes his arm. She jumps in and takes the wheel. After exchanging insults on their character flaws, and shocking each other with their mutual connection to Matthew, they go their separate ways; Charlie to attempt eluding the police on a motorcycle, and Shawn - after an emotional confrontation with her father - to sit on the edge of a high bridge and contemplate jumping. She will jump, but not before talking to Charlie again and reassessing her reasons.
