| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Intruder In The Dust |
With a screenplay by Ben Maddow based off a William Faulkner novel, Intruder In The Dust stars Claude Jarman Jr. as Chick Mallison, a young boy in rural Mississippi. The movie opens up with the locals watching as the sheriff drives into the town with suspected murder Lucas Beauchamp, a black man thought to have killed a white man. But as Beauchamp is taken into the jail he yells out to Chick Mallison to get the lawyer John Gavin Stevens (David Brian). Chick goes home for supper and pleads with John to take the case. It's here the movie goes into a long backstory on how Chick met Lucas after falling into a creek while hunting. Stevens agrees to talk to Lucas and he and Chick go to see Lucas. But Stevens preconcieved notions get in the way and Lucas feels like he can't trust him. He does tell Chick what happened. Chick then goes to the Gowrie grave in an attempt to find the truth only to find an empty grave. Now the sheriff and Stevens have proof that Lucas is innocent, but there is still an angry mob of townsfolk who want to lynch and burn the black man. In an ironic twist, Chick, Stevens, and the local sheriff set a trap to find the real killer who turns out to be a white man, which snuffs out the rage of the angry townsfolk.
