Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sugar and Spice
Lisa, a bitter "B" Squad cheerleader who has long aspired to the "A" Squad, is telling the police about her "A" Squad rival Diane's involvement in a bank robbery. It started, she says, when Diane met their high school's handsome star quarterback Jack at a game by kicking him in the head. It was instant love. But their status as the perfect couple suffered a blow when their parents learned of her pregnancy. Disowned, Diane and Jack set up housekeeping and had to scrape to get by. Despite their chipper loving happiness, Diane became frustrated by Jack's low earnings and their inability to get a loan. She persuaded her four best friends on the squad to help her with a bank robbery, and to never tell Jack.
For pointers, they watched heist movies. Kansas got her jailed mother to set up consultations with an inmate specializing in banks. They got guns from illegal weapons dealer "The Terminator" - a bug exterminator - in return for putting his geeky daughter Fern into their squad. They practiced by robbing the lunch ticket lady at school. They acted out their plan with dolls on a blueprint. They got matching disguises complete with Betty Doll masks. Feeling ready, they planned their strike for Boxing Day.
Despite multiple glitches - their weapons needing assembly, Jack selling their getaway car, one girl opting out, a yahoo coming at them with a knife - their heist was a success. And despite its notoriety reaching all the way to the Jerry Springer Show, it seemed they were unsuspected. Then Lisa, who witnessed the robbery, happily, cattily revealed them. From posing prettily in a bank lineup, they went quickly to jail. What Lisa does not tell the police about is the phone call Diane made from jail, and how it would change everything.
