| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Snowball Express |
In this Disney family film, New York accountant John Baxter dramatically quits his job when he inherits the Grand Imperial Hotel in Silver Hill, Colorado. With his wife Sue, son Richard, teenage daughter Chris and Stoutheart, their St. Bernard, he sets off for the Rockies with high hopes. Although the hotel turns out to be cobwebby and dilapidated, a "clapboard igloo" with guppies in the water and racoons in the oven, he decides to reopen it.
The local bank manager, Martin Ridgeway, refuses to give John a loan for the refurbishment. He repeats a previous offer to buy the place, to turn it into a home for boys (he says), but John is determined to stay. As he and Sue take a walk in the snowy hills which belong to the hotel, he has an inspiration: they will open a ski lodge, a surefire profit-maker. To impress a bank manager in a nearby resort John rashly claims he can ski, but on the slopes he displays only an uncanny ability to stay upright at speed which leads to a trail of destruction the local paper likens to an avalanche.
Ridgeway then changes his mind about the loan. Disregarding Sue's suspicions, John signs the papers and the ski lodge is opened. It is doing well, until a runaway steam engine ploughs through the dining room. Ridgeway gleefully prepares to foreclose, but John sees a way to make some money, by entering the Silver Hill Cross-Country Snowmobile Race and winning one of the generous prizes. The only trouble is, he has never driven a snowmobile before… and Martin Ridgeway is the reigning champion.
