Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Eragon
"Eragon" is based on the first of Christopher Paolini's best-selling novels which he wrote while he was still a teen. And although its commercials make the film look a bit like a "Lord of the Rings" clone, once you watch a bit more of it you realize that its not a complete clone but rather seems to be a derivative of quite a lot of fantasy stories. It's a complete fantasy with dragons and blind fortune tellers evil kings and wise mentors.
The protagonist of the movie happens to be a young boy played by newcomer Edward Speleers. He is a poor farm kid whose family finds happiness in their simple lives. He stumbles upon a blue rock which he picks up thinking it to be a semi precious gem or something that might bring him into some cash. Instead it brought him a dragon!
A pretty blue dragon who at times seems like a weird cross between a long necked doggie and a dinosaur but who cares as long as its cute and voiced by Rachel Weisz. The hatchling is named Saphira, because of its sapphire blue color, and grows to full size in a matter of hours. It has a strange telepathic link with his dragon rider Eragon and they soon develop a strong bond of friendship.
And just as in every other fantasy movie, a mentor and guide appeared as a stranger to teach Eragon how to handle his new found courage and his dragon friend. Together the mentor Brom (Jeremy Irons) and Saphira tell Eragon that it is his destiny to save the world.
As it is said in the movie, Eragon happened to be “one part brave and three parts fool” so his foolishness tells him to be the hero and he accepts the fact that he has to defeat the evil king Galbatorix played by John Malkovich
Robert Carlyle plays a red haired sorcerer named Durza whose evil army of Urgals are just a bunch of fat, bald guys with red contact lenses—scary.
The movie extends into much predictable battles between the good and the evil. Eragon joins a group of rebels who were only too happy to meet another King Galbatorix enemy. There is a lot of drama in the movie which includes a lot of sword fights and some hints of romance between Eragon and the brave but beautiful rebel Arya played by Seiessa.
The movie has been rated 10 due to a lot of fantasuy wars but over all it is a good afternoon movie which can be enjoyed with the family.
