Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Trust the Man
This movie is a drama where the director has made an attempt to portray how wealthy new Yorkers have a loads of time on their hands and tend to get into trouble with relationships.
The story is of Elaine (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who is an agitated assistant in a publishing company who is also working on a children's book. She's been dating Tobey (Billy Crudup), who seems to be some sort of sports writer and is a complete loser. It seem that he had never quite grown up and when Elaine decides that she wants to get married and have kids she realizes that she would probably have to do it with someone else.
The loser's sister Rebecca (Julianne Moore) is a successful actress taking a break from the screen to star in a play and is married to Tom (David Duchovny), a househusband who used to be in advertising but recently quit his job and is now a sex addict. He stays at home and takes care of their two young kids and spends the rest of the time watching porn. The couples are close to each other but their relation has been severely affected by Rebecca's nose diving career and Tom's addiction.
Tobey and Tom are best friends and Elaine and Rebecca are best friends. The whole movie revolves around their winning, dinning and then cribbing about how their lives are unsatisfactory.
Both the couples are going through a rough patch and the entry of Eva Mendes takes place as a temptress from Tobey's past and doesn't really help the situation.
Gary Shandling plays a therapist who tries to solve the married couple's problem but their problem gets solved with time. All the difficulties in the movie sorts themselves out as the couples realize that they truly love each other.
The movie has been rated R for sexual content and language.
