| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about West of Zanzibar |
The magician Phroso's wife leaves him for another man, crane. A fight with Crane leaves Phroso paralyzed.
Later, when Phroso returns home he finds Anna dead, leaving behind a daughter. Phroso believes that Crane killed Anna and that the girl is his daughter. So, Phroso plots his revenge.
Phroso spends the next 18 years in Africa as the leader of a small village not far from where Crane has set up an ivory business.
Phroso had arranged for the daughter, Maizie, to be raised in a brothel in Africa. Phroso brings Maizie to his village and promises to reveal her father, whom she's never known.
However, instead of helping her, he turns her into a drunk.
Phroso also brings Crane to the village to reveal his daughter and show him what's become of her.
However, Crane informs Phroso that Maizie is his daughter.
When Crane is accidentally killed the villagers prepare to burn him, and as is their custom, they must burn his daughter, believed to be Maizie, along with him.
Now, Phroso is forced to save Maizie. Using his magic, he helps her escape, but the villagers burn him in her place.
