Investment banker J.B. Ball is one of the richest men in his area and is wise about how he spend his money. Unfortunately his wife Jenny Ball, believes money grow on trees and spends it carelessly on a $50,000 mink coat. This caused a heated argument between the Balls and J.B. furiously throws the coat out of their townhouse window, and into the streets. But the coat lands right on the head of Mary Smith, a young woman on her way to work on a double-decker bus, where'd she sat on the upper part of it.
Smith quickly get off the bus, trying to find out who is the owner of the coat. J.B realizing the errror of his ways, tells Smith she can keep the coat.
After a few moments of hestitation, Smith keeps the mink but that is not all. J.B takes her to one of the most expensive clothing stores in the city, to find a fur hat to match her now pricey coat. Afterwards, J.B drops her off at work in his stretch limo. However co-workers noticed the extravagant scene, and assumes Mary is well taken care of. This promptly caused her to be immediately fired, reason of being not suited to work for the boys magazine any longer.
Now out of work and penniless, Mary bad luck turns into the opposite as J.B continiously help the woman out and even let her stay at his luxiorious hotel suite for only a dollar a day. But this caused more attention another person Mr. Louis Louis, a bitter former hotel owner whose business went down the drain after being foreclosed by J.B's bank. Louise believes Mary is a mistress, and that their "relationship" can possibly do J.B's reputation in. Living in a wonderful place isn't good enough, as Mary needs to eat so she heads to a small restaurant where she meet and falls in love at first sight with waiter John Ball Jr., who makes ends meet on his own without the help of his wealthy father. Little does Mary knows he comes from a well-off background and that his father is the very same man that helped her a few days earlier. But gossip gets more jucier as the local newspaper accused J.B senior of having a affair.
