| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Swan |
In a make-believe little Eurpoean barony, the widowed Princess Beatrice has two children, the lovely and marriageable Princess Alexandra and her teenage younger brother George. Princess Beatrice is worried that they will lose their castle as their family fortunes have been sorely reduced. She invites Alexandra's cousin Albert, who is the Crown Prince, to visit, hoping that the reportedly wife-hunting Albert will choose Alexandra.
Alexandra is in the bloom of young adulthood and not quite ready to face the responsibility she must carry, yet she obediently meets Albert, who turns out to be not quite what anyone expects. Though obviously older than Alexandra, he actually seems shyer, uncomfortable and uninterested in ceremonies and politics, but comes alive when introduced to the family's cows and when invited for a game of football with George and George's tutor, Dr. Nicholas Agi. The handsome Dr. Agi, being kindly and sensitive to Alexandra's situation, becomes a sympathetic ear. Then, in the princess' first grown-up dance with Agi, sparks fly. With first love awakened, Alexandra must decide whether to follow her heart or her duty as a princess, but before she does, Albert makes a surprising declaration.
