| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Shop on Main Street |
This Czech film masterpiece (the winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 1965) tells the story of a weak, cowardly but well-meaning man named Tono who finds himself managing the confiscated button shop of an elderly Jewish widow. When the time comes to round up the Jews in the village, Tono must decide whether or not to protect the woman or save his own skin. This situation leads to one of the greatest studies of a life-or-death internal struggle ever put on film. About as gripping and moving a film as anyone is ever likely to see!
