Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina
A cruel circus owner steals two children from a kingdom of tiny people to perform in his show. The little boy escapes, but the baby girl, called Thumbelina, grows up in the circus, performing alongside other "rejects". Just 6 inches tall, she rides a mouse and performs a version of King Kong with a monkey. The boy meanwhile has been adopted by Ben, a kind mechanic, who calls him Tom Thumb. Both Tom and Thumbelina wonder if there are any other people their size, especially as they get older and want to find someone special to love. Thumbelina sings a sad song about how lonely she is. Just as Ben is encouraging Tom to look for his people, Thumbelina makes a spectacular escape from her dollhouse prison.

By a river Thumbelina meets some unfriendly girl bugs who call her ugly. Then two moles who see her paddling a sardine can downstream tell the crazy Mole King how beautiful she is. He decides she will make a fine queen and sends them to fetch her. Thumbelina bumps into Tom while they are both trying to avoid the burrowing moles. They decide to join forces, only to be divided, first by the bugs who take a fancy to Tom, then by the moles who carry Thumbelina underground.

The Mole King talks about having a huge wedding and inviting everyone in the forest, dismissing Thumbelina's objections. He sings a scary welcome song, sending his two minions to find her a comfortable hole. In her hole Thumbelina finds a sparrow they have captured to eat at the wedding feast. She frees the bird, Albertine, who helps her to escape. The moles chase her, but are frightened by a wild boar in the forest. Thumbelina is celebrating being free, when she is captured by an new enemy. She discovers that Tom and the bugs have also been taken.
