Review Summary and Plot Commentary about White Sands
White Sands stars Willem Dafoe as Ray Dolezal, a deputy sheriff in a small town in New Mexico. The movie opens with Ray driving up a dusty road to a crime scene, where a dead body was found. The coroner is there and ray quickly inspects the scene and collects evidence. On the ground the dead man is clutching a suitcase. Ray opens it and finds five hundred thousand in cash. The body is taken back to the coroners office and the cause of death is confirmed as a suicide. Later on Ray checks the money into evidence and finds a fiber in a stack of money. He takes it back to the coroner who tells him is from an ugly carpet. This sparks an idea, and Ray goes to a local hotel to where the dead man was staying. Here he finds a bite out of a piece of wax paper and heads back to the coroner to see if this is still in the man's stomach. The coroner finds it in the stomach contents and Ray calls the number on it. Assuming the dead man's identity in an attempt to solve the crim, Ray agrees to meet the person he spoke with over the phone at a hotel with the money. Ray is overwhelmed by two women with guns and they take the money. Later on that night he is attacked again but it's really the FBI. This is when the story twists as Ray agrees to help the FBI get its money back by going undercover get at an arms dealer, but ultimately he weeds out internal corruption.
