| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Forrest Gump |
A slow-witted man, Forrest Gump, waiting for a bus tells his life story to strangers sitting with him.
He recounts his meeting of Elvis and the death of his mother. He recounts going to college on a football schollarship. He tells his story of joining the army, being sent to Vietnam and saving his commrades and coming home a hero. He recalls meeting several presidents. He remembers playing professional ping-pong. He recalls getting rich by starting a shrimping business. He recounts becoming famous for running back and forth across the country over a period of three years.
But every story led back to one intertwining theme, his one and only love, Jenny, whom he finds and loses time and time again.
He reconnects with Jenny to find they have a son together.
Jenny is dying from an incurable disease. Forrest marries Jenny. She dies a short time later and Forrest raises their son on his own.

Forrest Gump (Hanks) is a somewhat retarded but good-hearted Southern boy who grows up in Greenbow, Alabama. There's not a drop of fraudulence, wickedness, or falsity in him, but unlike the nearly blank slate Chauncey Gardiner in "Being There," Forrest has feelings, empathy, and a touch of wisdom. He also turns out to be quite an athlete. As he matures and grows older, he is witness to and participant in many of the great historic events of the 1960s and 1970s, moving from football hero to soldier in Vietnam, to world ping-pong champion and then shrimp boat captain and tycoon. The one steady thread is his true love, Jennifer "Jenny" Curran (Wright), who's too wild and sophisticated and broken to settle with Forrest. This odd but majestic story was made into a screenplay by Eric Roth and Winston Groom based on the latter's novel, and directed by Robert Zemeckis, who slyly weaved Hanks into stock footage of the Kennedys, Johnson, Nixon, John Lennon, Dick Clark, and many others. Some found it simplistic, but the film won the Oscar for Best Film of 1994.

Forrest Gump is the story of a man's journey through life and innocent reflections on what living is all about. It tells the story of a man that's tangled in life but survives the hardships through his simplicity.

Tom Hanks is Forrest, Forrest Gump, a man with a slight learning disability who finds himself in the middle of many different sorts of adventures in our American culture. It's his simpleness that makes Forrest such an endearing character. Winner of 6 Oscars including Best Actor (Hanks) and Best Picture!
