| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Unbearable Lightness of Being |
D-Lewis's character is a Doctor in eastern europe. He is unable to control his sexual urges. He is a competent, devoted Doctor but spends endless hours having sex with any woman ready for it (and they all are!) His wildest sex partner is absurd in that she seems like a plastic doll, bendable into any position yet not real.

This gorgeous movie, based on Milan Kundera's marvelous novel of the same name, depicts the lives and loves of two couples -- a young promiscuous doctor, his simple country girl/waitress wife, his spirited lover, and her stolid banker boyfriend -- in Czechoslovakia during the Communist takeover in 1968. Although all the acting is excellent, special kudos to Daniel Day-Lewis, Juliette Binoche, and delectable Lena Olin as the first three characters described above, respectively. Deliciously erotic, the film feels like a European production, though American writer-director Philip Kaufman made it in 1988 between "The Right Stuff" and the similar but less successful "Henry and June."
