| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Married to the Mob |
Very much in the spirit of his "Something Wild" two years before, director Jonathan Demme mixes action and romance for a potent blend. Here, Michelle Pfeiffer is the (redheaded!) wife of a Mafia up-and-comer (Alec Baldwin) who gets rubbed out. She wants out of the whole crime scene with her sweet son, but her dead husband's boss starts to hit on her and the FBI opens surveillance, thinking that she really is the boss's mistress. Soon FBI agent Matthew Modine is falling for her too. Modine is a little weak, but Pfeiffer has rarely been more winning, and there are tons of terrific supporting performances: Dean Stockwell as the Mafioso, Mercedes Ruehl as his overbearing wife, then-newcomer Oliver Platt as Modine's partner, winsome Nancy Travis as a waitress pickup, and Joan Cusack as another Mafia wife. Watch for future "Welcome to the Dollhouse" and "Happiness" director Todd Solondz in a walk-on as a zany reporter.
