| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Miller's Crossing |
Tom Reagan (Byrne) has been the longtime lieutenant of Irish mob boss Leo (Finney), but when Leo gets into a feud with rival crime boss Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito), Reagan tries to keep the peace and apparently joins Caspar's team. This beautifully shot 1990 film, loosely based on the Dashiell Hammett novels _Red Harvest_ and _Glass Key_, plays with shifting loyalties, trust and betrayal, black humor and shocking violence. Finney is magnificent, particularly in the astounding sequence in which two hit men come to kill him in his bed. Among the cameos one may glimpse Steve Buscemi, Michael Badalucco, Sam Raimi, and Frances McDormand. Although a bit cold, this is one of Joel and Ethan Coen's greatest films.

This crime classic made in 1990 by the Coen brothers, who would go one to make Fargo and The Big Lebowski, chronicles a the criminal rivalry between two crime bosses,Leo(Albert Finney) and Caspar(Jon Polito). Caught in the middle is Leo's right hand man, the film's main character, Tom(Gabriel Byrne) who maybe playing one against the other or may have an alterior no neccessarily villanious reason. With its array of colorful characters, acid verbosity, breathtaking photography, lush period setting and a complete command of tone that veers brilliantly from shocking violence to absurdist humor, this is the best film the celebrated pair have made.
