Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Charly
Cliff Robertson, a forgettable actor from the 1960s, never did anything so fine as this film adaptation of Daniel Keyes's marvelous science fiction story, "Flowers for Algernon." A mentally-retarded grown man who works as a custodian in a bakery participates in a scientific experiment intended to boost his intelligence many times. It works ... but with mixed and ultimately sad results. Claire Bloom plays the school teacher hired to guide the man's intellectual and social growth, and with whom he inevitably falls in love. This tender, sweet film was refreshingly scored by Ravi Shankar.
