Review Summary and Plot Commentary about In the Realm of the Senses
Like "Equus," this bracing and explicit film about erotic passion -- or madness -- by writer-director Nagisa Oshima (perhaps better known in the West for his later "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence"), was inspired by a true event. Not long before the Second World War, a dazed woman was found wandering the streets with her lover's genitals in her hands. Oshima concocted this story of a man and his female servant's mutual obsession to explain that hideous result. Though highly memorable, the film is not particularly romantic (or subtle); in the U.S., it would qualify as pornography. But it is a highly original piece of work.
