Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Dresser
Albert Finney is Sir, an aged theater actor-manager struggling to keep his company afloat in the dark lean days of the Second World War. (The character is based on British Shakespearean actor Sir Donald Wolfit.) Tom Courtenay is his devoted, poofy "dresser" -- the one who gets him costumed and fit to tread the boards every night. It's a fascinating codependent relationship, with the two abusing and hating and adoring each other (though the dresser is the more alert and knowing of the two, of course). Finney is roaringly magnificent, as always, but Courtenay truly carries this quiet, excellent little movie.
