| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Mona Lisa |
Just out of prison, middle-aged working-class George can't find work anywhere except through the local crime boss for whom he took the fall. His job is to chauffeur a high-priced black callgirl to her appointments. The two do not have anything in common, and have trouble getting along, but George falls for this unattainable and inappropriate object anyway, and eventually learns her secrets. As George, Bob Hoskins has never been better -- gritty and tender at the same time. Michael Caine is appallingly slimy as the crime boss, Cathy Tyson cold, aloof and yet vulnerable as the prostitute. A very sad story, but superbly told. Still writer-director Neil Jordan's (The End of the Affair, Interview with the Vampire, The Crying Game) best.
