This movie is about a man who discovers himself after he is sentenced to life in prison.
Andy plays the role of the innocent man, who is doing time for a crime he did not commit. Andy Dufresne is a banker before he was convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Andy is shipped to Shawshank Maximum Security Prison to spend the time of his life.
Andy slowly becomes friends with Red, an experienced lifer and his gang. Shortly Andy also becomes popular with the prison guards also the vicious Captain Hadley offered him protection against the jail's not so friendly convicts in exchange for financial counseling.
The warden also takes benefits from Andy's banking knowledge by exchanging privileges for creative bookkeeping. Over twenty years of time in prison Andy is able to maintain his sanity and dignity by his mental force.

Andy Dufresne is a bright, young Maine banker who is sent to prison for the murders of his wife and her lover (for which he maintains his innocence). Andy quickly finds that trying to isolate himself from his prison surroundings won't work, and realizes the strong friendships and terrible deeds that occur behind the walls. Ultimately, he decides that after 20 years it is time to get busy living, or get busy dying.

Andy is a banker, who is arrested for a murder he didn't do. He is soon sent to Shawshank prison, where he meets "Red" Redding, a clever prisoner who can get him anything for a price. Andy just asks for a small rock picker, and a poster of Rita Hayworth. The other prisoners, and even the guards feel sorry for him, and later Andy is the head of the prison library, and helping someone to read.

Persecuted and harassed, he eventually prevails over those who antagonise him, and gains favour with the prison authorities. Andy bides his time in jail, distracting himself from the harsh realities of prison life, whiling away time until he can be free.

Tim Robbins plays a one-time lawyer who is falsely accused of the murder of his wife. He goes to prison anyway, the notorious Shawshank prison. There he is be-friended by con-wise "Red," played by Morgan Freeman. The movie largely chronicles the life of the lawyer and how he deals with a convict's life. The movie is narrated by Red, telling the story of what happened before he was finally set free. The redemption part of the title is how the lawyer "gets even" for his loss of freedom.

There he meets long-time con Morgan Freeman, deals with the harsh conditions of prison life, and plans an escape over 20 years behind bars. James Whitmore turns up in a supporting role. Written and directed by Frank Darabont, who would later write "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" and "The Green Mile" (as well as uncredited work on "Saving Private Ryan"), and based on the Stephen King novella "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption," the film is surprisingly rich and satisfying.
