Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Swept Away
The characteristically long full name of Lina Wertmueller's 1975 movie is "Swept away ... by an unusual destiny in the blue sea of August." It's essentially a two-person film about a pair of titanic personalities acted with gusto by Giannini and Melato. She's a rich capitalist bitch and he's a sailor on her yacht with Communist sympathies. When the two are marooned on a small and isolated Mediterranean island, they must come to grips with each other -- class, gender and sexual issues get hashed out in lively manner. Some viewers charge this film written and directed by a woman is chauvinistically anti-feminist, but it's best to view it as a doomed love story between two fiery individuals.
