Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Shootist
THE SHOOTIST is a movie directed by Don Siegel in 1976. This film earned a nomination for the Academy award in the Best Art and Set Decoration category. Last John Wayne movie.

The setting is Carson City, Nevada in January 1901. Dr. Hostettler tells the well-known gunman John Bernard Books that he's suffering from a cancer in its terminal phase and that he has only only a few weeks to live. Books moves into Mrs. Rogers's boarding house where he hopes to find the quiet he needs.

But soon the whole town is aware of Books's presence and, one night, two pistoleros try to kill him in his bed. Books, forced to take pills in order to ease his pain, decides to choose the way he's going to die and organizes a gunfight with three bad guys of the town on the next monday.

It was the Duke's final film and what a way to go out! In “The Shootist,” John Wayne
plays a legendary gunfighter who is now facing his final test. He has terminal cancer. He
comes into Carson City to spend his final days in as much peace as possible. He moves into
a boarding house run by Lauren Bacall and her son Ron Howard (both giving memorable
performances!).   With music by Elmer Bernstein, based upon a book by Glendon
Swarthout, and directed by Don Siegal, “The Shootist” is no rip-roaring typical Western,
but a sensitive portrayal of an honorable man looking to live out his life in peace.
That is not to be, of course, but he does go out in honor. Guest stars James Stewart and
Richard Boone add to the atmosphere and overall effect of this venerable film.
