Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Two for the Road
Joanna and David meet casually on an ocean trip. She is with a group of choir singing school friends, he is foot loose and fancy free. She - tall, thin and gawky - fancies him, while he, handsome young man, fancies the pretty girls. Yet one by one the pretty girls get the chicken pox thus putting Joanna and David together. They tour about Europe together slowly but surely falling in love. And so they marry. This is just the beginning, as the story is of their life together with its many ups and downs and downs and ups.

It should be noted that the story is not told in chronological order, which can be a bit confusing, but works very well with flash-backs and even flash forwards. There is gorgeous scenery, couture, music (melodic Mancinni) plus Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney. Their glowing affection on the set was real, the doldrums of their film life together are well played, but it is the joys and humor they shared which make this film stunning.

Teaming two European actors to tour Europe was an excellent idea! Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney are a married couple who are celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary
and they choose to do it by re-tracing the steps they took those years ago when they met hitching around Europe (one could do that safely in those days!). Much flashback is used, but the winsome ways of Miss Hepburn and Finney are captivating on film. It is a love affair that must be tempered by fire! But survive it they do, and along the way, what fun, what memories. Music is by Henry Mancini and the film is directed by Stanley Donen.
