| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Indecent Proposal |
A young couple, very much in love, set out to build their dream home. Diana, a real estate agent (Moore), finds the perfect spot; David, an architect (Harrelson), designs the place. But the recession hits and they're on the verge of losing everything, so they decide to go to Vegas and try to win big. There, millionaire John Gage (Redford) notices Diana, learns of their troubles, and offers them one million dollars if he can spend a night with her. The couple ponder the deal and go for it, with complicated results. British director Adrian Lyne built a career on infuriating movies (Nine and a Half Weeks, Fatal Attraction), and this was one of his most annoying. Beautifully made, it raises some provocative issues, but in a clumsy and hamfisted manner. It might have been more interesting if the husband were more attractive (say, Tom Hanks) and the millionaire less so (Gene Hackman in crusty mode, perhaps), but Redford's character seems the sort who would expect women to come to him for free and not demean himself by offering money for them. It's astounding that Redford the actor agreed to take this part. Oliver Platt has a lovely cameo as the couple's venial attorney.
