| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Mission Impossible |
An espionage team on assignment in Prague is ambushed and everyone killed except American special agent Ethan Hunt (Cruise). There's a mole somewhere, and suspicion falls on him because he survived. The bigger danger is a plot to steal a computer file that contains the real names, placement, and cover stories of all other covert operatives, so Hunt must identify and stop the real spy without the support of his own organization. This involves fleeing government assassins, breaking into the CIA's most impenetrable vault, and clinging to a speeding bullet train in the Chunnel. The plot of this 1996 homage to the 1960s TV series is impossible to follow, and the characters shallow to nonexistent. Director Brian DePalma delivers a stylish rush of a film that definitely thrills the viewer but leaves almost nothing after its passing.
