| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about State and Main |
David Mamet wrote and directed this uproarious comedy about what happens when a film company invades a small New England town. Kicked out of New Hampshire, the crew (which includes Macy as the driving director, Hoffman as the naive and scrupulous writer, Parker as the prima donna who has a crisis about taking off her top, and Baldwin as the male star who can't keep his pants on -- especially around teenaged girls) moves into Waterford, Vermont. The roles are caricatures, but only slightly so; except for Parker (and she's funny enough to be forgiven), they are rarely overdone. Hoffman is particularly sweet in a developing romance with a bookstore owner played by Rebecca Pidgeon (the lovely Ms. Mamet), and Charles Durning and Patti LuPone are terrific as the mayor and his wife. A hoot and a half.
