Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Battle of the Bulge
In this movie, an american colonel,(played by Henry Fonda)is a retired police investigator who finds himself on the general's staff in Europe near the end of the second world war. his natural curiousity leads him to belive the presumed "defeated and demoralized" german army is preparing a major offensive in the Rhineland. His commander is arrogantly reluctant to belive him as events unfold, his suspicions are confirmed. Meanwhile, The highly decorated and ruthless german Colonel Hessler(aptly played by Robert Shaw) is recalled from the horrific fighting at the Russian front to perform a "Special mission" of utmost importance to the "Fatherland". Colonel Hessler is given a brigade of the new "King Tiger" battle tanks' and is ordered to mount a major assault against the allied forces in Germany with the intent of changing the course of the war. The story touches on the lives of soldiers on both sides and including Hessler's lifelong aide(Hans Christain Blech) who only desires to return homes, the commanding general(Robert Ryan)who must commit his troops, the hustler(Telly Savales)who vows not to "go home poor" The seasoned veteran (George Montgomery)who keeps the unit sharp; and the infiltrator (Ty Hardin) who works behind enemy lines to support the "special mission". "Battle of the Bulge" is na action packed account of a desparate battle featuring massive tank battles, riveting drama and an inspired music score.

Things are looking desperate for the Third Reich, and desperate times all for...a new armored offensive (and some paratroopers disguised as Americans)! Meanwhile, a clever American intelligence officer figures out what's going on and helps the army respond. Sub-plots include the German officer who wants the war to go on and his aide who wants the war to end, a tank commander who loses his sweetheart in the German assault, and a young officer who escapes the Malmedy massacre. Much more entertaining than it is historically accurate.
