Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Fisher King
Some years ago, Jack Lucas, a "shock jock" radio talk show host (Bridges), inadvertantly goaded a psychotic caller into committing an act of extreme violence: he shoots 7 restaurant patrons. Racked with guilt, Lucas wallows through three years of despondency, alcoholism, and suicide attempts while his long-suffering and loyal girlfriend Anne (Ruehl) tries to stand by him. One day Lucas is attacked on the street and saved by a crazy street person named Parry (Williams). This transient says he is on the quest for the holy grail, during which he glimpses the Red Knight riding the streets of New York. Eventually Lucas realizes Parry is the widower of one of the victims of the restaurant shooting, and he seeks to make good on his past actions. This is a very funny but affecting 1991 film directed by Terry Gilliam of the Monty Python troop. David Hyde Pierce and Amanda Plummer are in the supporting cast. Ruehl won an Oscar for best performance by an actress in a supporting role, but all the acting is good in this moving story.
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar

A charismatic DJ pushes an emoitionally unstable man over the edge causing him to kill himself and seven others; including the main characters wife. He, himself falls off the wagon and in a fit of suicidal ideation encounters the main character and befriends him. He finds out about their connection and tries to make things right for both of them. The movie explores mental illness in a fairly accurate manner. Many realistic issues related to mental illness are brought up. The movie has serious undertones along with the comedy.
--Shirley, Resident Scholar
