| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Paths of Glory |
In the muddy, bloody trenches of France during the First World War in 1916, General Broulard orders subordinate General Mireau to take the German fortress known as the "Ant Hill" and promises a promotion for success. It's an impossible mission headed by field commander Colonel Dax (Douglas). After the French forces fall back with heavy losses, Mireau orders a court-martial of three fall guy soldiers for cowardice. An outraged Colonel Dax defends his men, but in vain, and they are sentenced to die by firing squad. Stanley Kubrick directed this dark and bitter 1957 indictment of war, ambition and hyperpatriotism.
