Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sea Hawk, The (1940)
In 1585, Spain is concerned about how England is endangering its world dominance, and is secretly building an armada to crush its rival once and for all. English pirates, however, are constantly attacking Spanish shipping and stealing its gold (and freeing the galley slaves, most of whom seem to be English). For the sake of peace (and because England cannot afford an all out war) Queen Elizabeth is forced to put a stop to the Sea Hawks' hunting. However, she authorizes one hero to go to Panama to steal a fortune in gold destined for Spain. The hero is captured due to a traitor in the English court. More adventure and swashbuckling ensues. An intense, thrilling sea battle opens the movie, and a dramatic duel between our hero and the traitor ends it. There is also a beautiful Spanish love interest for the hero. Errol Flynn, Alan Hale, Claude Raines, and Una O'Connor play their roles as the ensemble cast they are.
