| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Virgin Suicides |
Based on a book by Jeffrey Eugenides, The Virgin Suicides is told as a memory of a group of boys who when they were growing up, were fascinated and obsessed by the lives of the five Lisbon sisters (Lux, Mary, Therese, Bonnie and Cecilia). The five sisters were very different and mysterious to the neighborhood boys who befriended them. The girls lived a very sheltered life and had strict religious parents (Turner and Woods). After the youngest daughter commits suicide, the parents become even stricter with their daughters, to the point where they are not even allowed to leave the house to attend school. In desperation, Lux the oldest (Dunst), enlists the boys' help to get out of the house one night. She proceeds to end her life that evening, followed closely by the suicides of the remaining three sisters.

THE VIRGIN SUICIDES is the first movie written and directed by Sofia Coppola, daughter of the acclaimed director of THE GODFATHER.
The film relates the tragic story of five sisters who committed suicides in 1975 without any obvious reasons. With an admirable delicacy, Sofia Coppola describes in light touches the life of an ordinary family and the end of the american dream.
The best american movie of 1999.
