| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about With A Friend Like Harry |
Michel (Lucas) and Claire (Seigner) are off to their summer farm in the mountains with their three young, contentious daughters. All is not well in the family, the marriage, and with his overbearing parents. On the way, Michel runs into an acquaintance from high school: Harry, independently wealthy after his father's death, with a curvy young thing (Sophie Guillemen, looking a bit like Jodie Foster's simple-minded but luscious kid sister) in his hot car. Harry invites himself and his girl up to the isolated farmhouse. Turns out he was just knocked out by Michel's writing in school -- he can still quote one of his classmate's poems from memory -- and is very disappointed that Michel hasn't kept up his writing. Harry decides to remove all the obstacles he sees to Michel's becoming the writer he should be. As bodies begin to pile up, the mood and the suspense are gently but firmly Hitchcockian. Note that lovely Mathilde Seigner, who plays the puzzled but supportive wife, is the sister of Emmanuelle Seigner (Bitter Moon, Place Vendome), and that Guillemen's character, called "Plum" throughout the film, is identified as "Prune" in the final credits, maybe because by that time she's ... oh, never mind.
