| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Addams Family |
For 25 years, Uncle Fester has gone missing from the Addams Family, a creepy but jovial collection of characters who live in a gothic mansion with its own graveyard. Tully Alford (Dan Hedaya), the Addams's attorney and cousin, cooks up a scheme to have a loan shark acquaintance's son Gordon (Lloyd) pretend to be Uncle Fester returned, so they can get access to the family's wealth. Gomez (Julia) and Morticia (Huston) Addams are overjoyed by "Fester's" return, but daughter Wednesday (Ricci) remains skeptical. This 1991 film adaptation of the short-lived 1960s TV series, itself inspired by Charles Addams's New Yorker cartoons, is mostly a series of pretty good cartoon jokes strung together by a weak and not very lively story -- although Julia and Huston turn in spirited performances. Best scene is when Wednesday (Ricci was only 10, but this was her third feature) and brother Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) turn an excerpt of Shakespeare into a bloody gross-out at their school play.

In this dark comedy based on the animated series, a macabre family lives life in a creepy mansion. When a stranger arrives at their door, they think it's their long-lost uncle, Fester. Really it's just a dead ringer posing as him to steal the family's fortune. Mass mayhem ensures, and the stranger becomes one of them.
