| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Election |
This wonderfully pointed and hilarious satire did not get the audience it deserved in theaters. Reese Witherspoon stars as a very ambitious high schooler who will do anything to win election to the student council presidency. She's an ever-optimistic, hard-working schemer -- sort of a cross between Martha Stewart and Richard Nixon. Matthew Broderick is a conscientious social studies teacher who doubts she should get the position (partly because she destroyed his colleague and best friend's career by having an affair with him, although Broderick lusts after her himself), so he prods a sweet, naive jock -- Chris Klein of the "American Pie" movies -- to run against her. Broderick's character also gets tangled up with his friend's ex-wife. An additional complication is provided by the jock's younger, adopted sister, who also runs for president because her former girlfriend has taken up with her brother! This is adult satire in the grand style, not another silly and sentimental high school movie, and terrifically well done.
