| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about My Man Godfrey |
MY MAN GODFREY is a social comedy directed in 1936 by Gregory La Cava. William -Godfrey Smith- Powell is an unemployed man trying to survive in the America of the Depression era. He is hired as a butler by Carole -Irene Bullock- Lombard, a member of the high society of the city. The Bullocks are a very eccentric family, totally unaware of what's going on outside their fancy mansion. Soon Irene falls in love with Godfrey, her "protégé", despite the warnings of her sister Cornelia. But who is really Godfrey ?
A very smart comedy.
--Daniel Staebler, Resident Scholar
