| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Manhunter |
Will Graham(Petersen)is the semi-retired fbi agent, who is the key to cracking the 'Tooth-Fairy' murders. These murders appear to have no motive or pattern leaving little time to stop the next predicted murder from happening. But in order to proceed with the investigation Graham must confront his old enemy by meeting the man responsible for his early retirement, Dr.Hannibal Lecktor(Cox). Graham uses Lecktor as a bridge into the Killers thoughts and reasons for his actions. .

A serial killer is slaughtering a family every month. The victims seem chosen at random, and the police are stumped. FBI section chief Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina) lures agent Will Graham (Petersen) out of semi-retirement for the case because Graham was able to catch Hannibal Lecktor (Cox). Reluctant Graham goes to Lecktor in prison for help, but the mad doctor starts playing off the new killer against him. The psychopath's latest victim is a blind woman named Reba (Joan Allen), and Graham has to catch him before she dies a horrible death. Petersen looks very young in this underrated 1986 film -- like a more handsome, regular featured Sean Penn -- and his deductions and crime scene work oddly foreshadow his 2000 hit TV series "CSI." Luscious Kim Greist (a year after her work in "Brazil") appears briefly as Graham's wife. Michael Mann's screenplay and direction (based on Thomas Harris's novel, _Red Dragon_), is understated and sharp. The soundtrack featuring Kitaro, Klaus Schulze, and Shriekback doesn't intrude as much as in other Mann projects, though Iron Butterfly's "Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida" invigorates the bloody climax quite appropriately.
