Review Summary and Plot Commentary about THX 1138
The movie centers around a society that controls human emotions by drugging them and love and sex are punishable by death.
The main character THX 1138 and LUH 3417 are having illegal sex and have stopped taking their drugs. There friend SEN 5241 turns them in and they are sent to strange white endless prisons with other "offenders". After days in the prison THX and SEN decide to escape the prison. SEN loses his mind on their journey out of the prison. SEN runs off in a random direction and THX meets up with the hologram SRT and they find a way out of the prison.
The conclusion shows them escaping the oppressive society while being chased by strange robot cops.

--Sam Ward, Resident Scholar

Like everyone else in this 25th century society, THX 1138 (Duvall) follows a strict drug regimen to keep him docile and productive on the job. ("Drug evasion" is a serious crime.) When he decides to try skipping the drugs, he awakens and falls in love with LUH 3417. Eventually THX is imprisoned in a pure white space, along with his homosexual neighbor SEN 5241 (Pleasence), but escapes. This was George Lucas's first feature, at age 26, based on an award-winning student short he did while at USC, and though the script is at times plodding, the film is visually sharp, and about as thought-provoking as anything Lucas has done since: there's a holographic character, the robotic cops with gold face plates cease pursuit when their work exceeds its budget, children are educated via IV drips, and overstressed folks let off steam in "prayer booths" facing a huge poster of a Jesus-figure (which happens to be taping their "confession").
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar

This is the story of a society where people
live as drugged slaves and everything, even
sex, is regulated.
