A young boxer in Marseilles in the 1920's gets paid by a gangster to take a dive, but wins instead, and tries to escape with his sweetheart (who is married to the gangster). His plan fails, so he joins the French Foreign Legion. The usual adventures ensue, with the polyglot platoon, the comeradery, and the last stand against the Arab horde.
