| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sweet and Lowdown |
SWEET AND LOWDOWN is a movie written and directed by Woody Allen in 1999. Sean Penn and Samantha Morton were nominated for the 2000 Oscars in the Best Actor in a leading role and Best Actress in a supporting role categories.
The 30's. Emmet Ray is a young jazz guitarist, almost as good as Django Reinhard. Self-centered, vain, alcoholic and kleptomaniac, he has also strange hobbies like shooting rats or watching passing trains. A mute young laundress falls in love with him and follows him in Hollywood when he's asked to appear in a movie. Later, Emmet will leave Hattie and marry Blanche - Uma Thurman - a rich heiress who is soon cheating on him.
Great performance of Sean Penn. For Allen aficionados.
