Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Rapa Nui
This story is set on Easter Island, among the people who built those giant heads. It seems the great chief believes that if they build enough giant heads, the gods will send a white canoe which will take them somewhere. Therefore, the high priest has the tribe of oppressed head carvers (short-ears) carve the biggest head ever. Meawhile, time is coming for the annual competition in which each tribe sends one man to swim to a small island and bring back a certain bird's egg to determine who will be chief. The chief's champion is in love with a girl from the short-ear tribe, who already has a short-ear suitor, who also used to be a friend of this guy. The short-ears are getting a bit upset at their situation, as they are being over-worked and under-fed, and demand to take part in the competition. Things come to a climactic head in the competition and everything falls apart, and this explains why there were no trees and no people on the island when it was discovered soon after by Europeans. Interesting mix of Asian, Pacific Islander, Australian Aborigine, and Latino actors is occassionally distracting, but the drama and scenery is effective enough to make it worth watching.
