| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Love and Death |
In a 1975 film set in Russia (but shot in Budapest and Paris), Woody Allen spoofs Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Ingmar Bergman with the story of a coward and pacifist who accidentally becomes a highly-decorated hero in the war against the invader Napoleon. There are many great scenes and lines (from his childhood meeting with Death, to flirting with and meeting the Countess Alexandrovna, to his spiritual thoughts in prison the night before his scheduled execution), and even slapstick. Lively Prokofiev compositions fill the score.
